Some English friends we met here in Brisbane were leaving to take up positions in Chennai, India, & they wanted 2 jewellery boxes in uniquely Australian timbers, one for her & one for him. This is the box for him, an accoutrement box, used for storing of watches, rings, bill fold or wallet, & mobile phone.
The carcase is WA Sheoak with a Southern Silky Oak lid panel & Black Bean inlay & corner mitre splines. The till is made of Silver Ash as well as the sill it sits on & the box is lined with double velvet. This was done by sticking the velvet to 3mm MDF & attaching the boards to the carcase with special double sided tape. At the most inopportune time I didn't have any 4 or 6mm ply on hand so I had to use solid Cedar for the bottom panel, this was thicknessed to 4mm. The dimensions, they are 350 X 240 X 90mm. The carcase is 12.5mm thick Sheoak.
I used 30% gloss Mirrotone lacquer for the finish.
